Isaac PeñaLast week I dropped by Sankalpah Yoga to take a class with Isaac Peña. He used to teach at Exhale, and I remembered his classes being nice and firey. (My favorite story about Isaac: He’s teaching at Exhale, and tells the class to come into a Squat. “If your heels don’t touch the ground, put [...]

Jump Back: Slow Motion

Here’s another view of a Jump Back, in super slow motion: It’s a Crow pose, almost a Tripod Headstand, in the beginning. Great video. I think this guy is overusing his lower back. It looks like he collapses into his low back a little when he lands. And watch the curve of his spine from [...]

Yesterday I taught a workshop for Internet Week NY. I’d randomly decided their schedule of events needed “yoga and teatime” in addition to the lectures and cocktail parties. I set up an RSVP form, so I could gauge interest and experience levels, and had 40 people “interested”, and 14 people RSVP. Nearly all marked their [...]

Jump Back

I quit Ashtanga because I hated the jump backs so much. Obviously I wasn’t doing them like this: So graceful! No “thunk” sounding right into the lower back. (Ok, there’s no sound in the video. I can pretend he’s perfect, though.)

Morning Yoga Revisited

This morning I went to a free class at Om Factory, schlepping over to the Garment District at 10am. (Still better than the 7am call time when I used to teach there.) I was puffy-eyed and groggy from some gluttony the day before, but knew that three hours before breakfast wouldn’t work for me, so [...]

Oceana BaityLast week I went to Oceana’s class at Kula Yoga. She’d been recommended by a friend a long time ago, but my recent enjoyment of Kula-trained teachers finally got me all the way over to Tribeca. It was great. Absolutely great. Oceana has a soothing demeanor, a wealth of knowledge, and a perfect sense of [...]

Fast Yoga, Happy Yoga

Look how happy he is!Scientific American says that rapid thinking makes people happy — “more elated, creative and, to a lesser degree, energetic and powerful.” …although fast and varied thinking causes elation, fast but repetitive thoughts can instead trigger anxiety. (They further suggest that slow, varied thinking leads to the kind of calm, peaceful happiness associated with mindfulness meditation, [...]
